Transgender Homeless Adults: What the Data Tell Us

Limited information exists about the number of transgender people experiencing homelessness. There are very few data sets relative to this population, but all the data tells a similar story: transgender people are more likely to be unsheltered than their cisgender peers, and those who are unsheltered have considerably more health and safety challenges than those who are sheltered.

Transgender individuals are disproportionately unsheltered. Sixty-three percent are living in such situations. For comparison, 49 percent of cisgender people experiencing homelessness are unsheltered.

Both Black and White unsheltered transgender people have extraordinary health and safety issues. Notably, a staggering percentage of both Black and White unsheltered transgender people engage in risky behavior: 100 percent of Black and 97% of white people.

Unsheltered Black transgender people experiencing homelessness also average somewhat more system interactions than their unsheltered White peers

Many transgender people already face challenges such as discrimination, rejection, and legal battles; and physical and behavioral health battles, as well. Such problems are exacerbated when they are homeless and can become life-threatening when they are unsheltered

2 Weeks until Giving Tuesday!

Help us work to make Wicomico’s unaccompanied youth No Longer Invisible and connect them to services that provide housing stability.

December 1, 2020, is Giving Tuesday and the official kick-off to our No Longer Invisible annual end-of-the-year fundraising campaign to fund our homeless and runaway youth outreach program that comes out of our drop-in Center located in Salisbury, MD.

FYP Arts & Media Drop-In Center provides an inclusive and safe space for teens and young adults in Wicomico County. Our creative youth development programming helps us identify and engage with young people living in an unstable environment or those at-risk of becoming homeless and connect them to resources and services.

What are we trying to fund? Fenix Youth Project Inc. wants to Identify and Engage homeless youth in Wicomico County. By hosting outreach events, conducting surveys, and spreading awareness about youth homelessness, we hope to further fulfill our mission to empowering marginalized youth to use their creative talents to impact social change within their community.

With this year’s fundraising goal, we hope to host 12 Closet Pop Us in 2021 to distribute free clothes to the community and in locations where young people typically congregate to identify and let them know of our drop-in center services. In Spring 2021, we will be conducting a homeless youth outreach survey where our goal is to identify as many homeless youths between the ages of 13 and 25 as possible in Wicomico County. Volunteers, as young as 13 years old, will have the opportunity to educate the community about possible legislation and policy changes that end youth homelessness.
