FAQs
Who can come to FYP Arts & Media Drop-in Center?
Youth aged 14-24 who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of experiencing homeless are welcome to come to our center. All young people are welcomed to see our space as a safe and inclusive space. Including those who identify as LGBTQIA+. Allies are also welcomed.
MON – FRI 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM the drop-in center is for ages 14-24 only, with exceptions for staff, volunteers, and individuals arriving for certain programs. Unauthorized adults are not allowed in the Drop-In Center during Drop-In hours, and this includes parents and caregivers. Adults are welcomed to wait outside while Drop-In is taking place.
If you would like a tour of the Center, or to meet our staff, please arrive before Drop-In hours
Who supervises Drop-In?
Drop-In is managed by Fenix Youth Project Program staff and is supported by a team of volunteers who have been background-checked and trained. Every area in the Drop-In Center (performance area, digital lab, and chill lounge) is monitored by at least one volunteer to ensure the safety and inclusion of every person who comes to Drop-In.
We encourage all interested parents to meet our team of friendly staff and volunteers when first bringing their youth to our center.
What happens on my first day?
When you arrive at Fenix Youth for Drop-in, you will be warmly welcomed into our family and asked for your preferred name and pronouns. There is a brief, digital intake form that will need to be completed upon arrival that asks for your contact information and some questions about your background. Want to come in and just enjoy the facility without the whole “welcoming” thing? Fill out the intake form and agreement prior to coming on your first day.
After you complete your paperwork, one of our friendly youths will give you a tour of the space and answer any questions that you might have. You might be nervous at first, but rest assured that everyone feels like that at first. Our youth and staff will make sure that you are included in conversations and activities.
You will receive an orientation following announcements where you will learn more about the history, rules, and offerings of the Fenix Youth Drop-In Center.
Do my parents need to know I'm here?
No. We will never contact your parents if you are not comfortable with that. We ask that you provide an emergency contact, but this does not have to be your parents.
What happens at Drop-in?
During Drop-In Hours, young people hang out, eat snacks from our free snack area, check in with volunteers and staff if needed, catch up with friends, or participate in a program or arts and crafts. The Drop-in Center is a space for you to express and explore your genuine identity while connecting with other youth who share similar experiences.
At the start, everyone in the center gathers in our family room to do introductions, answer a question of the day, and listen to announcements. Youth can share personal life updates with each other and receive support and congratulations.
After introductions and announcements, youth will choose between programming activities or just hang out. Programming in the past has included song/poetry workshops, informational sessions, art lessons, speakers, and much more.
Do I have to pay to come to the Drop-in?
No. Drop-in is completely free thanks to our generous donors and Wicomico Partnerships for Families and Children. You or your parents are welcome to make a donation so we can continue to grow Fenix Youth's mission.
